Great Articles on the Co-Dependents
Sad Note:
July 2002 - The Mecca Cafe was Arsoned
The blaze caused $40,000 damage, the cafe -- a
focal point for hundreds of roots rock, folk, country and
hill-billy music fans -- was partially gutted. The
kitchen area and the rear section of the restaurant were
totally destroyed, but firefighters prevented the blaze from
spreading to the front of the building. Arson
investigators determined the fire was deliberately set,
possibly by someone who has a grudge against the Mecca.
Owners of the cafe, which was famous for its funky
roadhouse atmosphere, are vowing to rebuild the place with its
old broken-down culture intact. The cafe, once
used as a recording venue by the Calgary roots-rock band The
Co-Dependents, will retain its popularity with music fans once
it's rebuilt.
